How Doulas Get More OB and Midwife Referrals

October 9, 2026
Two professionals collaborating over coffee and a laptop

Ask any busy doula where her best clients come from, and you’ll usually hear the same answer: referrals. When an OB, midwife, or chiropractor tells a patient, “You should really talk to this doula,” that family shows up already trusting you.

The good news is that provider referrals don’t have to be luck. With a little structure, you can build a referral network that keeps your calendar full, season after season.

Why Provider Referrals Matter Even More Now

In Colorado and California, Medicaid now covers doula care, and licensed providers play a part in that process. Health First Colorado requires a recommendation from a licensed provider, and the recommending provider’s NPI goes on the claim. In California, Medi-Cal’s additional postpartum visits require a written recommendation from a licensed provider. That means the providers your clients already see are a natural starting point for families who need you. (Always confirm current rules with your state. We cover the details in How Doulas in Colorado and California Can Market Medicaid Coverage.)

7 Ways to Build OB and Midwife Referrals

1. Start with the providers who already love doulas

You don’t have to win over every OB in town. Start with the people most likely to say yes: midwives and birth centers, family medicine practices, prenatal chiropractors, lactation consultants, pelvic floor physical therapists, childbirth educators, and prenatal yoga studios. A handful of strong relationships beats dozens of cold drop-offs.

2. Create a provider-friendly one-pager

Providers are busy. Give them one page they can read in 30 seconds and hand to a patient. Include:

  • Who you are and the families you serve
  • Your services (birth, postpartum, lactation, classes)
  • Your training and certifications
  • Whether you accept Medicaid, Health First Colorado, or Medi-Cal
  • How you work with the care team (and how you don’t, like never giving medical advice)
  • A QR code to your website or referral page

3. Show up the right way

Call ahead and ask the office manager when a good time to drop by would be. Keep it short, bring your one-pager, and ask one simple question: “What do your patients need most that they’re not getting?” Listening first makes you memorable for the right reasons.

4. Make referring you effortless

Add a simple “For Providers” page to your website with your one-pager, your service area, and a short referral form. The easier it is for a front desk team to send someone your way, the more often they will.

5. Be a great teammate at every birth

Your reputation in a hospital or birth center is built in the room. Be respectful of the medical team, support your client’s choices, and make the nurses’ jobs easier, not harder. Providers notice the doulas who help births go smoothly.

6. Close the loop and say thank you

When a provider sends someone your way, thank them. A handwritten note or a small treat for the front desk goes a long way. If your client gives permission, a quick note letting the provider know how things went shows you’re part of the team. Always protect your client’s privacy.

7. Track where your clients come from

Add “How did you hear about us?” to your inquiry form and keep a simple list of referral sources. After a few months, you’ll know exactly which relationships are worth more of your time.

Your Online Presence Is Part of the Referral

Even with a glowing referral, most families (and many providers) will Google you before they reach out. If your website is outdated or hard to use, a warm referral can go cold. Our checklist of 10 things every birth doula website needs is a great place to start.

How We Can Help

At The Mina Company, we help doulas look as professional online and on paper as they are in the birth room. A few ways we can support your referral strategy:

  • Provider rack card or one-pager design: $240
  • Business card design: $240
  • “For Providers” landing page with copy: $520
  • Custom marketing roadmap: $750. A clear plan for your referrals, website, and local visibility.

Research from the JPMorgan Chase Institute found that small business owners who use AI for admin work save about 6.8 hours a week. That's nearly a full workday, back in your hands, every week.

Sounds great. So why isn't everyone doing it?

Because most people who try get stuck. They download a tool, copy a few generic prompts, and it never quite fits how they actually work. Now you're fighting with it, redoing what it got wrong, tweaking the same prompt ten times. The thing that was supposed to save you time is quietly eating more of it.

That's the part we handle. We build AI around your business, the right tools, prompts made for your industry, workflows that run on their own, and we make sure it actually sticks. Not a download link and good luck. A setup that keeps giving that time back long after we're done.

Ep. 4 is out now! Avoiding the Hard ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ

Over my 14th anniversary dinner, I caught myself saying I just didn't want any more hard. And then spent two days realizing how much energy I've wasted trying to dodge the hard things instead of trusting I can get through them.

This episode gets into grief, the anxiety that shows up even when life is good, the versions of yourself that still have a voice in your head, and learning to be the one who steps up for yourself. Business, motherhood, money, grief, the messy middle of all of it.

New episodes every Wednesday. Follow so you don't miss what's next.

You know the feeling. Slow month, quiet season, and you're looking at a marketing invoice wondering why you're paying full price for customers who just aren't out there looking for you right now.

You'd ease off if you could. But you're locked into a year, and it does help the rest of the time, so you eat it.

What if you didn't have to? What if your marketing flexed with your seasons and knew when to step back, when it's right for your business, not the agency's?

That's how we work. Some clients pause entirely in their slow season, and we pick right back up when things get busy. And no, we don't quietly overcharge the rest of the year to make up for it. Flexing with you is just how we do things.

You should always know exactly what you're paying for.

That's why our full SEO checklist is right here, nothing held back. No black box, no ""trust us, it's working."" Just the actual work that keeps you showing up when it counts.

And none of it is a one-time setup. Search keeps changing, so the work keeps going. That's how you hold your spot instead of slowly slipping off page one.

Ep. 3 is out now! I Don't Want a Business That Needs Me.

Most of us build our businesses like we're strapped into a roller coaster we can never get off. I've spent almost eight years building the opposite, a business that can run without me.

In this episode I get into how I started Mina nine months pregnant after losing my job and while my mom was fighting cancer, the burnout that led me to half step away and take another job in 2022, and what it actually looks like to grow something without making it another child that needs you.

Plus why I think women drastically underuse AI in our businesses, and the one prompt I'd tell you to run today.

New episodes every Wednesday. Follow so you don't miss what's next.
