    Sketchy marketing practice # 4 - purchasing pre-made blog posts! 💻
This is one that tends to make people scratch their heads - aren't blogs GOOD for SEO?? 🤔
Yes, blogging IS good for SEO, but there's a caveat - it's only really beneficial if you're posting original content. 😳
If you're purchasing pre-written blogs that are potentially also being posted on hundreds (or thousands!) of other websites, Google can flag this as "duplicate content" and sees it as potential spam! Not only that, but chances are these blogs are not written with YOUR ideal customer in mind, so they might not even be useful to your users if they're too generic or broad.

Are there other marketing hacks you've heard of that seem too good to be true? Ask us and we'll let you know if they're up to snuff!

    Sketchy marketing practice # 3: Mass-purchasing backlinks 🔗

Having backlinks (when other websites link to your website) is good for your website SEO, but only when they're from QUALITY websites! There are services out there where you can purchase backlinks in bulk, where links to your site will be added to hundreds or thousands of websites. If that sounds too good to be true, that's because it is 😜
The grand majority of the sites where these links are being put are from spammy, inauthentic websites whose sole purpose is to hold links for these types of services. Google is smarter than you might think; it can tell when your links are coming from poor sources, and in the long run having a high "spam score" in your links will DAMAGE your SEO! ☠️
When it comes to link building, slow and steady is the name of the game! Build quality links by guest blogging, getting articles published, and sharing content to other outlets.

    Sketchy marketing practice # 2: Playing the follow/unfollow game ❤️ ➡️ 💔

Don't get us wrong, following other businesses and individuals on social media is great! However, you should only be following people for the right reasons (to engage, grow, learn, and share) and not simply as a means to grow your own follower count and then ditch them afterward.

In fact, this can actually HURT your social media profiles in a few ways:
1. Following/unfollowing too many accounts in a short amount of time makes social media platforms think you're a bot and may lead to your account being restricted, blocked, or even deleted 😱
2. Gaining new followers is only beneficial if they interact with your content; if you're obtaining followers just for the sake of a higher follower count, it will impact your engagement.
3. You can alienate and burn bridges with potential customers - if someone sees that you follow them, they decide to follow you back, and then a week later they see that you're not following them anymore...do you think that makes them want to become a client of yours? (Hint: not really!)

What's another sketchy marketing practice you've heard about?

There are some SKETCHY practices in the marketing world that we aren't exactly on board with 🙈
This week we're diving into all the *iffy* forms of marketing that might seem like quick fixes and hacks, but ultimately can DAMAGE your marketing, business, and reputation in the long run.

First up: purchasing followers 🤑
While having 5,000 might *seem* like it's better than having 500, that's not true when those extra 4,500 aren't real people who are actually interested in your business. Engagement is the name of the game when it comes to social media, not only because that's how you turn followers into customers but also because that's how the social media algorithms work to prioritize your content!
If you have 5,000 followers but only a small handful of likes, comments, or shares on your posts, that's a cue to the social media gods that your content isn't all that great...which isn't necessarily true!

Put simply, you want REAL followers, not a bunch of bots who just add to your follower count 🤖
